Presenting: Spring Edition

To celebrate the coming of spring, longer days and the arrival of Handmade in Britain: Spring Edition
we have set a task to our fabulous Spring Edition Exhibitors to explore, putting into words and images, the effects of the seasons on their designs and processes.

A sense of spring and attention to nature can be seen running through a number of this years contributors; from the  Scottish Highlands where Eileen Gatt produces her stunning frosty folklore inspired silverwear and jewellery, to the botanical precision of Charlotte Day's kaleidoscopic floral prints designed right here in London.

Are you a designer-maker? Tell us what YOU think...

How do the materials you work in communicate and connect to spring and an awareness of the seasons?
Does the natural world influence your work and creative processes and if so how?

Jewellery @ London: A Celebration

With the show quickly approaching we are excited to announce our talented jewellery exhibitors! Our Jewellers have found inspiration for their pieces all over the wonderful city of London. We are so excited for them to be a part of our show from May 10-13th 2012 at the gorgeous gallery@oxo overlooking the river Thames!

Anne Morgan

Anne Morgan is a Welsh jewellery designer. Anne makes her jewellery using reticulated silver and combining it with semi-precious stones. Her new work, "Coast", which is supported by the Arts Council of Wales uses a combination of her own work and both natural and manmade objects found from various UK coastlines. Anne has been particularly inspired on her trips to the Thames where she has collected pieces of driftwood that she has incorporated into her pieces making them extremely unique. She has also been selected to make the crown for this year's Eisteddfod in the Vale of Glamorgan, which will be revealed in August 2012.

Louise O'Neill

Louise's work is characterised by simplistic lines and pure forms. Louise is inspired by the architecture of London's buildings, skylines, boats, and bridges. The majority of Louise's work is in 18ct gold and often incorporates precious and semi precious gemstones, notably tourmaline, aquamarines, sapphires or diamonds. Louise selects stones that she finds particularly beautiful, an unusual colour or shape, and sometimes has them cut to meet requirements where the design demands. Louise is interested in light and how it is reflected from, and refracted through the stones and often she highlights edges of the metal elements to draw attention to a particular aspect of the piece.

Ceramics @ London: A Celebration

With six weeks to go the countdown begins to our own little celebration of London through craft - we have all exhibitors in place and are very excited to begin sharing them with you. This week we focus on the Ceramists who will be featured at the selling exhibition, in a hope to whet your appetite with a glimpse to the quality to be seen.

Noa Cermaics - Maria De Haan

Maria was inspired to train as a ceramicist after extensive travel in East Asia, which fuelled a passion for the understated, elegant designs of the region.

Following an apprenticeship at North Street Potters and one-on-one training with renowned potter Simon Leach, Maria took up residency under Mike Goddard in a converted 18th century sugar mill on the beautiful island of Bequia in the West Indies.

She returned to London in 2008 and set up her own studio, Noa Ceramics, where she now works full time.
Representing how the world inspires the creativity so abundant in London, Maria offers skill and quality with her designs which elegantly compliment the exhibition.

Norman Yap

Wheel thrown vessels in stoneware and porcelain clay.

Norman Yap, a self trained potter who speaks several languages, was born in post-colonial Singapore but chose to become British. Making wheel thrown studio bowl and vase forms with rich colours and interesting textures in either stoneware or porcelain clay, Norman changed his career from a management consultant to full-time maker after receiving a book on the subject from his partner. The book was Susan Peterson's The Craft and Art of Clay and it inspired Norman to make an unprecedented career move, he learned the craft by attending classes and also by observing, inquiring into and being in the company of other potters. All his hard work paid off when a buyer purchased his entire collection and continues to ask for more until this day. Norman sits on the council of London Potters.

Stephanie Wright

Contemporary hand thrown stoneware offering a fresh approach to the British tea service. Distinctive, lasting forms made from durable materials.

Stephanie combines traditional throwing skills with unconventional design approach to generate a distinctive style of sculptural and functional ceramics. Her current work in clay is an invitation to explore and celebrate the sense of excitement and energy associated with movement.
Ideas come from anything in motion: a flock of birds, a growing shell, a mounting wave a dancing couple and notably the River Thames.  Although each piece is a snapshot in time, the speed and motion each represents may be different.

Gin Durham

Floral and ornate ceramic sculptural pieces.

These beautifully crafted and nostalgic toy like forms incorporate contemporary social tensions within a childhood theme. Gin Durham's work will be hard to miss at the show the bold and usual subjects draw in the crowds as was demonstrated at Handmade in Britain at Chelsea Old Town Hall in 2011.

Lucy Goodwin

Lucy Goodwin Designs is all about individuality, style and the ability create a unique piece of art using traditional skills, incorporating both hand and machine.

Lucy graduated from Staffordshire University in July 2009 with a First Class Honours Degree in Surface Pattern Design. She is inspired by the ever changing trends in fashion and lifestyle, alongside artists and designers both past and present to create designs with and original and unique twist.

Lucy is inspired by the ever changing trends in fashion and lifestyle, alongside artists and designers past and present, to create designs with an original and unique twist. This is why Lucy uses London as one of her main influences in her design work. She expresses the very fashionable city by depicting landmarks and iconic London buildings into her ceramics.

Janet Stahelin Edmondson

Exploring antique textures through porcelain

Janet's new work draws on the particular properties of Porcelain; its fine texture and translucency. The porcelain is able to absorb the delicacy of the lace, reflect its texture and provide a unique interpretation of the translucency of the lace in the clay.  The resulting works whilst often having functional form, perhaps a jug, a vase, a candle stick, or a bowl, are first and foremost exquisite individual pieces of ceramic sculpture.

Janet was originally trained at the Manchester School of Art where she graduated in Three Dimensional Design specializing in Ceramics and Silversmithing.  She was a member of Northern Potters where for several years she edited their Newsletter and helped organize annual camps and exhibitions.  Moving to the Cotswold's in the early nineties she worked from her studio in Mickleton, exhibiting in Galleries in Stroud, Cheltenham and Broadway. She also taught at the Guild House in nearby Stanton, and assisted in the hanging of mixed Ceramic and Fine art exhibitions at the Anderson Gallery in Broadway.

Joy Trpkovic

Award-winning Joy Trpkovic finds working with porcelain so addictive that she often works late into the night on her clay pieces, managing only a few hours sleep most nights. She uses her hands and the simplest wood tools to pinch and carve her work. She relishes the risky nature of making fragile translucent porcelain pieces, testing the limits of the material and using the movement and shrinkage in firing to enhance the organic quality inherent in her work.
"....Joy Trpkovic has created some really beautiful functional vases with Keraflex and is to my knowledge the first and only person to create a functional form entirely out of Keraflex, but I think that Joy will agree that these vase forms are quite fragile and although they are a major achievement, it is more along the lines of pushing the limits of what can be done with Keraflex and is not intended to be, and cannot be as strong as functional porcelain vases made by other means. Joy's work is conceptually and materially very important (and beautiful) and is a major achievement with Keraflex porcelain but if all an artist wanted to do was to create a functional porcelain vase, Keraflex would not be the obvious choice of medium due to its fragility." Rachel Kingston, Ceramicist. President of the Keraflex company. Arizona. U.S.A.

EXHIBITOR BATH 2011: Silver Kitsune

Silver Kitsune designer maker Heather Fox's Sumptuous Silver range takes inspiration from drawings of nature and then translates the drawn line into silver, with just a subtle Japanese influence, she then started to add colour into the equation and the Colour Feast Collection was born.  Heather has taken a touch of inspiration from nature, added in a spot of texture and mixed with a splash of colour to creat a playful collection that is a Colour Feast for the eyes.  The coloured pieces are laser cut powdercoated steel set in white precious metal
Floral Fancies takes inspiration from the other two collections, a spot of colour and a touch of texture.  The floral design is hand pierced in either white precious metal or guilding metal with just a few pieces flocked in bright pinks and subtle greys

Silver Kitsune also offers a Personalised Pieces collection of jewellery that is precisely that, personalised. Whether you want a necklace just like Carrie from Sex in the City or you just want to wear your name on your wrist this collection is for you.

EXHIBITOR BATH 2011: Glass on Glass

Glass on glass offers unusual, kiln-formed glassware made with recycled glass. By using reclaimed glass to create wall tiles, bowls, candle bridges and myriad other useful and decorative objects, offering a material destined for landfill a new life by giving it a different shape, colour and purpose; it is a constantly evolving process. Designer maker Elaine Mason's commitment is that each piece should be unique, a work of art in it's own right, not to be replicated or copied unless specifically intended.

Elaine has chosen to work with re-claimed glass and to create unique pieces of colour and texture from an otherwise waste product - re-cycling at its best. Using a fusing process (two pieces of glass fused together in the kiln) it is possible to encapsulate all manner of other materials within the glass - from precious metals to seed heads - and for this, too, she looks at re-cycling what is around her; cutting up used t-light holders, empty tomato puree tubes etc.

EXHIBITOR BATH 2011: Dot Sim

Dot Sim designs are inspired by her rural Scottish environment – from changing landscapes, windswept beaches, and stormy seas, to the minutiae found in rock pools and the garden. Dot "draws" with metal to capture movement and quality of line.
The work is handmade using traditional gold and silversmithing techniques. Dot chooses to use precious metals - materials that stand the test of time, as she is interested in the role of jewellery as heirlooms that are handed down, providing intimate memories for future generations.

EXHIBITOR BATH 2011: Deryn Relph

Deryn Relph is a textile designer, with a love of colour, pattern and texture, who likes to think creatively about the use of textiles she designs and constructs.
“Although I specialised in knitted textiles for Interior use during my BA(Hons) Textile Design at Winchester School of Art, I merge this with previous upholstery and furnishing skills to create unique and contemporary solutions to an idea.
Versatility is something I believe to be important, and I am keen to think ‘outside the box’ and take on any challenges for which my textile background might hold the key!
Issues affecting the Environment, and Sustainable design underpin my design ethos, and consideration to ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ is made throughout the process, with use of colour and technical ability aiding the solutions.
Working from a studio at my South coast, Hampshire home, I often re-invent discarded furniture and lightshades, making them desirable in a contemporary home. Informed and considerate choices are made in selecting fibres and yarns which come predominantly from factory surplus stocks.”
“Inspiration for my work is often taken from aspects of nature, particularly structures, or scientific imagery.
Nostalgia and evoking an emotional response to engage the user with an object play a part – if something makes us happy, or we love it for the memories it brings I believe we will treasure it for longer rather than send it to landfill.Retro influences are often evident in my designs, inspired by my own childhood memories and happy times.”

EXHIBITOR BATH 2011: Corinne Phillips

Corinne Phillips is a Fairy Tale Maker. Storytelling is an important element of her art practice, she creates stories and illustrates them with textiles and found objects, embellishing with stitching and beads using both hand and machine embroidery, often using the sewing machine as a drawing tool.
She has nostalgia for childhood, especially fairy tales, Victorian inventions and gadgets fascinate her and she is always on the look out for unusual objects that she can use in her work.

Corinne likes to inject her quirky sense of humour into all of her pieces. She says; "When I am creating I am transported to a magical make-believe world and my aim is to bring it to life so that, hopefully, others can enjoy it too."

EXHIBITOR BATH 2011: Devotion

Devotion will be showcasing their clothing and accessories collection once again at Handmade in Britain. The principle behind designer Carolyn Cowan's collection is one of respect for the body, the shapes we all have naturally. To flatter and enhance our assets, physically, and to minimize the parts of each of us that we do not have quite so much affection for.

For Women, the range is extensive, stylish and elegant with flattering cuts to stimulate the imagination. The sizing is generous, going from a UK women’s size 8 up to a UK women’s size 18 on most items. Some styles go up to a UK size 22+.

The Mens Clothing
is a capsule collection of very beautiful Victorian coats, block printed waistcoats and shirts with some very elegant linens in plain colours all cut to bring style and elegance. The waistcoats are well cut and work on a woman’s body, too. The Brigitte Singh shirts transcend fashion, looking great with jeans or dressed up for the evening.

All the fabrics are natural fibers, breathable, comfortable and easy to care for. See Devotion at the Handmade in Britain Bath Show Stand HIB 48.

EXHIBITOR BATH 2011: Anne Morgan

Jeweler Anne Morgan enjoys silver’s potential for texture and her moonscape range explores the relationship of look and feel in the materials she uses. Her creations proudly show off their origins in workshop experimentation. This is what makes her reticulated silver surfaces in particular unique: each marks a precise moment in which she withdraws her flame from part-liquefied silver.

Once she has perfected these surfaces Anne off sets them with strong lines. She forges a relationship between organic texture and a simple geometry, rather like the placing of a formal structure in a natural landscape. She sets up a coupling in which each element complements the other.

Anne continues to expand her work using her well developed technique of reticulation, which she combine with semi precious stones such as garnet and aquamarine. The textures of her pieces work particularly well with stones such as Lava. Anne creates small batches and limited edition pieces that are highly desirable.

See Anne's work on Stand HIB 13 in the Assembly Rooms Bath from 17th-19th June 2011 (11am-6pm)
